  1. The hospital nurses will help you get started.  They will show you positions that are most comfortable while recovering from your c-section.

Here's a good link with a lot of good info for you.

But mostly, don't go into this thinking that you're going to 'try to breastfeed.'  Be confident.  You ARE going to breastfeed.  98%+ of women CAN breastfeed their babies if they are knowlegable and willing to make the effort.

  2. Go check out La Leche League's website.

    http://www.llli.org/

They have a ton of articles and you can get so much help through their forums.

Boppy's do indeed help, and you can also try lying down on your side with a pillow to protect your incision area.

Since you're having a c-section, make it a point right now to nurse as soon after the operation as possible. Some women can do it while they're being sewn up, some do it in the recovery room, and some end up waiting a while.

You really don't want to miss that first hour where the baby is very alert and ready to begin nursing.  If they have to take the baby away from you for a bit, make sure your husband goes with the baby to make sure they don't give the baby any formula or sugar water.

  3. Pads never helped me but cream did.  Don't worry too much.  By the time you have your bundle of joy in your arms, you'll be automatically ready for any challenges.

  4. Wow, Congrats on the baby. Just had my first in June via C-section after we tried natural labor for 17 hrs. The boppy is good. Now the pads are awesome they have some gel pads. I put mine in the freezer and let them freeze. The creams didn't work to good for me. But to each there own. You can try them if you want too. The first few weeks its going to hurt regardless what you do. Just bare with it. Its all worth it in the end trust me I know I have a 2 month old and we nurse just fine.

  5. Make a decision to breastfeed PERIOD! Then surround yourself with positive encouraging people. Make sure dad is on board and can ward off those who are not. Read, find support groups, and keep in touch with the lactation consultant at the hospital (some make house calls). Also, get your baby to breast as soon as he/she gets to your room. Even if baby doesn't nurse, maintain skin to skin contact. Wait until your baby has a secure latch to breast before introducing a bottle. Then introduce at about 4-5weeks. Keep in mind that baby's stomach at birth is the size of a marble, 3 days later when your mature milk may be coming in, it's the size of a shooter marble, then at 10 days the size of a ping pong ball. I hope this kills that thought that you "can't" make enough milk. I hope this helps!! Take a breastfeeding class!!

Good Luck and Happy Birth Day!
