it kinda sputters and hesitates on holeshot until its run for a little while and then it seems fine. its a 1974 50 hp, its probably just tired lol! what do you think? maybe it needs a carb rebuild or something?

  1. i had a 60 hp evinrude after a while i just got a new one if ur a serious boat get a new one if not bring it to a deal they fix it the best

  2. It sure sounds like you have a dirty carb.It could also have a little varnish in it from old gas that has dried up from sitting over time.Mercury has a great product for dissolving this c**p.

It is called Quicksilver Power Tune.Just soak the carb in it over night and in the morning blow it out with air and it will be like new. This stuff also works great for removing carbon build-up in your engine. You run the engine at a low rpm and spray about half a can into the carb and let it sit over night. The next day, start the engine and run it down the lake at full throttle for 5-10 minutes and it will blow all the carbon out the exhaust.I have never found a product that works as well as this does in

30 years of working on engines.I hope this helps you.Good luck.

  3. Tired?  That motor's just now getting broke in good!

Any other symptoms?  Cold start, warm start, both ok?  Lost any top end RPM's?

Is the timer base moving smoothly without sticking?

Compression test will tell if it's "tired".  Test it cold then again warm.

How do the spark plugs look?  If you're not using champion QL77JC4, give those a try.

My experience, a good carb rebuild never hurt anybody.

    Here's something else can't hurt -- a "decarb":
