Question:

I am having problems hooking up my older DVD player with my new HDTV, is there a reason why this would happen?

Just got a 42" HDTV. The TV has like 15 hookups in the back for composite, component, HD, cable, and the matching audios for all those. My DVD player is about 5 years old, but at the time, I was told it supported HD. It has the 5 connecting inputs, 3 for video, 2 for audio. When I hook it up to my old junky TV, the DVD player works fine, but when I hook it up to my flat screen, it just gives me the basic "no input" screen. I've tried plugging the cables into just about every port 2-3 times, no change at all, no audio at all either.

Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

(I have monster cords, a Vizio 42" TV, and a fairly generic old sony DVD player.) And btw, my PS2 works fine with my TV, plays games and DVDs.

  1. Have you tried the standard (yellow jack) video out to your new tv.

Many dvd players will only output 1 signal at a time so if you are now using the component (rgb) jacks it may not work, if it was set to the standard composite (yellow) on your old tv

see if you can get it going on the standard video and go into the dvd players setup menu and change the output to the component or (rgb) output, then try the rgb lines

    EDIT

Did you go through the "DVD" menu and set the output to component

If your dvd player was working on your old tv did you use the "yello" jack for video (or ch 3/4)

If you did and now hook it up to your new tv with the RGB jacks it will not work, the DVD is still putting video out on the yellow jack,

hook the yellow jack to the yellow on your new tv, now go through the tv av1/av2 until you get to the DVD player

Now use the DVD players remote, goto the DVD's menu and set the output to "component" or "rgb" don't confuse that with "composite" (the yellow jack)

Then your DVD player will work with the rgb lines, without the yellow line

Remember most DVD players can only output one signal or the other, not both at the same time

  2. Hey there, does your HDTV require you to go into the menu and select the input option before you switch over from cable TV to your DVD player? My TV is hooked up to a DVD player and Cable Box, but you hafto go into the menu and select which you would like to use.

Other than that I don't really know what the issue could be. Sorry, hope your problem gets resolved though.

  3. it's probably a TV menu issue, any DVD player will play on that TV. so use component RGB and find the video signal on your TV. take the audio from there! repair electronics!!

  4. you just have to make sure that you connected the right cables and that you choose the right av-ouput to watch from.  with plasmas, you have to wait a few seconds before you can actually see what has to be seen on-screen.

  5. It sounds like you have a progressive scan DVD player. As long as you have everything connected correctly and the TV on the right input it should work. I am guessing you are using the red, green, and blue video hook up and the red & white for audio? if so, then make sure there are all connected to same red, green, and blue inputs on the back of your TV. You would need to tell your TV to go to that particular video input mode. All of the video connections are label on the back of your tv. They say something like VIDEO 1, VIDEO 2, etc. or they may say INPUT 1, INPUT 2, etc. Just look to where you are connecting it to your TV. The way you tell your TV to go to a particular input is that there should be a button on the TV remote that says INPUT or TV/VIDEO or could say AV. You press that button until your TV says whatever input you plugged your DVD player into. If you still do not get a picture from the DVD and your are in the right video input mode on your tv, then it will point to output settings on your DVD player. You might have to tell the DVD player what output signal to use like PROGRESSIVE OR INTERLACED. You would want to put your DVD player in the progressive mode since you are using red, green, & blue. Or there may also be a menu setting in the DVD player menu that you have to choose to set that progressive/interlaced mode.
