  1. What firewall are you using? Is it windows firewall? And what programs are you trying to install? If you are using Windows firewall you can try to turn it off, which is easier to do. If everything goes well with your installation and update, then you're sure it's your firewall that is preventing you from installing programs and updates.

But I think there's something else preventing you from doing those things.

Anyway, you can try to turn off your windows firewall by clicking on Start -- >Control Panel --> Windows Firewall assuming you're using WindowPXP. You can also go to Windows Security Center, which you can also find in the control panel.

You can also try adding exceptions to your firewall. Adding an exception helps provide security, because the firewall is only open while the program is waiting to receive the connection.

If you need more help, I came acrosss this site http://dailytechlog.datastruc.net, just send him an email, he'll answer it for sure.

  2. Check your Event log to see what is causing the problem with the installation.  Disable your AV when installing programs.  The AV can sometimes cause problems when installing new programs.

For your firewall, make sure the programs that require internet connections have permissions to access the internet.
