Question:

I am having surgery & will be under general anesthesia and currently take flagyl is this safe?

I am taking Flagyl for seven days for a bacterial infection but I am scheduled for surgery in the middle of taking this medication. They will put me under general anesthesia for approx 3 hrs for mastopexy, is it safe for me to take flagyl at the same time??

  1. Always ask your doctor, but I'd get a 2nd opinion if possible, from the anesthesiologist.  Also, if you have insurance, call the nurse-line and ask.

    But I'd probably stop the Rx while under, unless it's been prescribed in a way you cannot stop for a duration.

  2. Yup.  Not a problem.  Take your medicines as you are directed to by your surgeon.

    I'm surprised that your surgeon would do an elective procedure while you have an infection.  The guy I work with would postpone your surgery.  They really hate when their work gets ruined by bacteria.

  3. the gas passer will ask you about current meds, and will make any necessary adjustments.
