  1. These will give anyone trouble.  The difference is, the better players know when not to attempt them.  The greater the distances between the balls with each other and the pocket, the less margin for error there is in your aim and execution, so the likelihood and percentages drop really fast.  Usually, I'll only attempt a combo when the second object ball is hanging in the pocket, or the two object balls are within ~6 inches of each other and the second one is no more than ~two diamonds away from the pocket.

  2. Like they said, combos are best left as a last resort, unless it is a dead in combo maybe. The biggest problem with combos (besides making the shot itself) is determining the leave of the cue ball and the other object ball that doesn't go in.  Even the best players will avoid combination shots if it's at all possible.

It's great to practice with them, because they will be a necessary evil from time to time. But don't be discouraged because you have trouble with them, most people do.

  3. Welcome to the club. What helped me a lot with combos is when playing position for that shot I try to leave the cue ball so that I'll be able to have as full of a hit as possible on the first object ball. The more I have to cut the first object ball to get the right cut on the second, the more I miss.
