  1. try putting the ball farther up in your stance and don't try to lift the shot into the air this will ultimatly cause the shot to be lower because the club head doesn't hit the ball at the right spot.  Just try to stay down on the ball

  2. 3 iron is not an approach shot. This is classified as a long iron which is one of the hardest clubs to hit.  Approach shots are those where the 7,8,9,pitching wedge and sand wedge are used. So reask your question.

  3. Trajectory is a confluence of contact and clubhead speed.  Most folks fail to be able to get long irons up due to poor contact.  A visit with your local teaching Pro may help.  The other potential is to shelve the 3 Iron and buy a hybrid.     BTW..... I never considered a 3 Iron shot an approach shot.........Maybe its just me.

  4. I personally love hitting the 3 iron and execute it pretty well most of the time, but the times I don't I know that I don't close the face soon enough causing the ball to slice or fade a bit. You maybe topping the ball and causing the ball to get up maybe 10 feet in the air. Anther thing you want to check on your 3 iron shot is your club head speed, if you don't have that you may not be able to get it up in the air. An approach shot with a 3 iron is not a good thing unless you hit it solid. Your better off laying up and wedgin one on the green, it'll be better for your score.

Your best would be to go out and invest in a hybrid 3 iron (21 degree) its a lot easier to hit and can find a lot of use for it. Getting to a point where you can hit a 3 iron well can take a lot of time and frustration. I would strongly recommend a 3 hybrid.

    Good Luck

  5. The 3 iron has a angle closer to verticle to keep the ball low. It is good for long shots. The higher the number on the iron, the higher (but shorter) the ball will fly.

Go to a driving range ans work out how far you hit each club

    3 iron may be 140 - 180 metres
