  1. I believe today is the Feast of the Ascension. In the United States, it's now celebrated on Sunday (known as Ascension Sunday). Germany & other European countries in that region are very Catholic & take holy days very seriously, much more so than in the States.

BTW the World Cup wouldn't cause shops & such to close. With all of the visiting teams & spectators, they will most certainly have increased business. And the Cup is actually based out of Berlin, though I know that some of the earlier games in the tournament are being held in other cities such as Munich. (I was in Berlin a few weeks ago).

  2. Today is Corpus Christi.

By the way, Ascension (Christi Himmelfahrt) is 40 days after Easter and never this late in June.

  3. It is a catholic holiday "Fronleichnam"  - which translates into "Corpus Christi"

  4. I would venture to say it has to do with the World Cup.

  5. Because it's Corpus Christi a Christian Holiday in Germany and Austria. (Fronleichnam)
