  2. Most American universities require a complex application where SAT or ACT score is only part of the admission criteria. Some schools don't require tests at all. Schools that do usually don't have a "cut off" per se, but usually do post average scores of admitted students on their websites.

The essay(s) is/are a big deal. Start working on them early, and revise, revise, revise! After revision, have someone intelligent read it, comment on it and revise again. Make it a masterpiece (and often you can use the same one for more than one college application).

Your marks in school can be a big factor too, and also the reputation of your high school.

Most American universities look well on extra-curricular activities: debate or government clubs, sports teams, participation in student led initiatives, theater, music, summer camps, internships or summer jobs and leadership activities. To look good on paper, make sure that you document everything.

  3. Sometimes a college's website will list the average SAT or ACT scores of the freshman class. That will at least give you a good idea of how high your score should be.

University Language Services ( http://www.universitylanguage.com ) has a whole guide for international students who want to attend a college or university in the US. Some of the essays talk about standardized tests, college applications and how to choose what schools to apply to. It might answer a lot of your questions.

    Good luck!
