OK. I am 14 and I was in my first play when I was 4, and have been doing plays and musicals ever since, with a healthy amount of lead roles. When I was in 7th grade I auditioned for my dance studio's production of the Nutcracker, and was placed in the finale with the senior class. I am in three choirs and I have played the piano since I was eight. I am in LOVE with theatre, Broadway in particular. I really want to be famous. The problem is, I live in the midwest, in the complete middle of nowhere and my parents aren't willing to let me travel to persue my dream. I feel hopeless and like I'm wasting precious time. I feel like I'm being held back. I want to be a star so much, the performing arts are the only things I want to do with my life. What should I do??

  1. If you want to go into this business, don't let a small town stop you!! You've just got to work extra hard :)

I would think of Kristin Chenoweth as inspiration- she's from Oklahoma! This proves you don't have to be living in NYC now to start building up a career.

You're not wasting your time right now- feel blessed that you know what you want to do at such a young age and run with it! Sign up for voice lessons once a week and take dance classes. If you have a good theater program at your school, get involved. There are community theater opportunities everywhere- you just have to look hard for them. Use the internet (google) to search for shows and choirs, or look in the paper. Keep auditioning no matter what. This will build up your resume as well as train you without much cost. Working with lots of different actors and directors is a good thing! Try to audition for an agency as well (when you think you're ready)- they can help spread your name and jump start your career.

    Good luck! :)

  2. u sound like the lady tht was just on americas most wanted lol. just dream big nd maybe ur dreams will come a reality if u really work hard

  3. Well, once you're 18, theres really not much your parents can do.

Are you planning to go to college?

if you are, pick one with a good musical theatre program! thats one of the best ways to start out!

also, even if you just want to perform, there has to be something for you that is close!

    go to

    http://castingaudition.com/

and search your location, im sure you'll find something.

I live in a rural town not close to ANYTHING, and i always find stuff. you also might have a community theatre some where near by!

    good luck!

  4. The Midwest isn't such a bad place for an aspiring Broadway star to be! One of the most respected colleges for studying musical theater is in Cincinnati, Ohio! See http://www.ccm.uc.edu/musical_theatre

I would suggest looking into summer study programs and camps, there are many good ones for high school students. Even though your parents don't want you to travel, perhaps you could still attend a summer musical theater camp next year. Most people who succeed in the world of theater don't get there overnight. It takes many years of studying and preparing, and a summer program is a good way to get your feet wet. (And don't worry--you still have plenty of time!)

You may want to consider studying musical theater in college, so start looking into what qualifications you would need to have to get into a good program like CCM's. I promise you don't need to live in a big city for that. What you do need to do is practice every day, to take advantage of the opportunities you do have where you live, and to keep your grades up. Take some voice lessons. Stay active in your dance studio. Get videos and CDs out of the library and learn about all the most famous musicals.

As a professional musician, let me advise you that being famous is a very vague goal. You should always do what you do just because you enjoy it! Being a professional performer--especially a famous one who travels a lot--can be EXTREMELY stressful and demanding. You really need to love what you do in order to make the stress worth it! Strive to make music, dance, and theater part of your daily life as much as you can and do it just because you want to have fun. I hope you succeed in your goal of becoming famous, but let that just be a side benefit!
