I am in need of a vehicle. I need a used, SUV that gets good gas mileage and is safe in a crash. Any ideas?

My Dodge Grand Caravan got totaled this week, I need another vehicle. I need something safe (kids) and high up (SUV type) and good on gas mileage...and, oh yes, used as I need to pay for it with the insurance money for my Dodge..which would be in the $12,000 range.

All new cars are safe in a crash. They wouldn't be able to sell them if they were not tested for safety. Also all SUVs get crappy milage, buy a normal car if you want it to be cheap to run. Unless you have more that 3 kids you don't need an SUV.

I was in a crash at 70mph in my parents car when I was 10. We were not in a big SUV and we survived unharmed simply because we wore our seatbelts.

You are safer in an SUV, but you also make the roads less safe for everyone else who is not in an SUV, especially if you've got kids in the back distracting you.

There's not really an SUV with good gas mileage, except of course if you want a compact SUV. I say get another van.
