  1. Hi there.

It has to be the lake district. Fantastic accommodation, great outdoor action and scenery, mountains, lakes, great bars and restaurants .... I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Try this site for more details ..... and have a great time!

  2. You aren't really comparing like with like. York is a historic city: the Lake District is a large area of outstanding landscape beauty. Which do you want? The experiences will be totally different, with one major exception: right now, both York and the Lake District are overrun with tourists. The Lake District, being larger, is better able to absorb them and it's still possible (just) to get away from most of the tourist traps and find a reasonble degree of solitutude. If that's what you want. A historic city nearer to Manchester than York  is Chester. still overrun with tourists, but it seems to absorb them better. Also the city wall is continuous and a better walk.

Closer alternatives to the Lake District:

The Peak District (on Manchester's doorstep)

The Forest of Bowland and the Ribble Valley

Oh, did I mention about tourists?

  3. Its got to be the lake district, its beautiful - check the link below for more info, and get your walking boots out, its the best way to see it!

  4. Hi Me M

I think David has hit the nail on the head.

I really feel for you, having to make a tough decision like that. But York and the Lake District will offer you two completely different  glimpses of England.

If you love history then yes York would be a great choice. But the English Lake District will leave you spell-bound. This is the place that has inspired many artists and authors in times past and present. It is easy to take a gentle stroll to see some of what Cumbria has to offer, mountain bike, take a steamer on one of the Lakes.....so much more, really depending on how much you love the outdoors.  There is also good public transport via one of the Greyhound Buses that will help you get about from one part of the Lakes to another.

Personally I would choose the Lake District, but then I am slightly biased. In fact I'm one of my hobbies is to help people to find the less crowded parts of Cumbria, with my website(I will try to put the link below, in case you are interested).

The Lakes will be crowded for sure, during the school summer holidays. But there are quiet corners that you can find and if you decide on that option, then please post back to get specific places that might be less busy.

Both are truly wonderful places albeit rather busy at this time of year.
