I am in the US on a student visa and got married. now what?

I was in the US on a student (F-1) visa and got married. My wife is a citizen. What forms do I have to file and how does the process work?

Marriage does not change your immigration status. You do not have to file any forms, unless you want to change your status.

You need to contact your local immigration office with the valid marriage license and they will give you the forms.  You still may need to apply of American citizenship.

You need to file the following:

   I-130

   I-131 (if you want to travel)

   I-485

   G-325A

   I-765

   I-693

   I-864

   Get these in ASAP if you want to start the process or be eligible to work in the US.  Are you out of status currently?  If you have fallen out of F-1 status you need to file immediately.  If not you can ease into it.  Get ready to hurry up and wait my friend, this process is not a lot of fun and takes a lot of time.

Your wife needs to file...

I-130, I-864 and G-325A

You need to file...

I-485, I-131, I-765 and G-325A

You need to file them all at the same time, in the same envelope.  The total cost to file will be $1,365.
