Well.... I am planning on joining the cross country team for my school. I am a freshie and last year when I did my mile in gym I got a 6min and 45secs. In track I am pretty much all around. I do the 400, 200, and 100 meter dash. Basically Im a pretty fast sprinter but I am interested in doing xc and I know it is way different that track because in xc its on rough terrain.

Since im new to cross country, can anyone tell me what to expect.

Is the crowd pretty big? Is it hard? what do we do in practice?

Im so interested in xc.

  1. Ok, i just joined, and i am on my 4th practice...heres the run down.  Xc is a LOT harder than you would expect, i wont sugercoat it for you.  It is also the greatest fun i have had in sports.  We usually run an average of 3-5 miles a practice.  We have already started some endurance and speed workouts.  Our coach made us run the bleachers at our school 8 times.  I was barely jogging at the end.  I didnt think it would be as ahrd as it was, but it is SO rewarding.  The warmups and workouts we do are pretty tough, but the end effect is awesome.  Dont hesitate, join the team RIGHT NOW!  The crowd?  By that do you mean the team members?  If you mean that, not really, we ahve about 20 people on XC, (Girls Varsty and Jv, and boys varsity and JV)  If you mean the crowds at the meet, i wouldnt expect many people to come, it isnt a spectator sport.

  2. i highly recommend joining cross country!!!

it's a very bonding sport and you make a lot of great friends. even those who don't do well are encouraged and treated with the same respect. i am a top runner for my team and it is my favorite sport. one of my best friends is on the team too. she comes in last and still enjoys it. it's an all around great sport.

you can expect lots of running. you will go long distances in practices and you should always try your best.

yes, the crowd can be big because there is no limit of teammates who can join. some teams are smaller than others and the first 7 who cross the finish line score points for each team.

it can be hard but you just have to run through your pain. always remember, you are closer to your goal with every step you take.

in practice, you run a lot and you will do cardio and all sorts of exercises to built your lungs and legs.

it's a whole lot of fun and definitely worth joining!

hope i helped and best of luck!

    :)

  3. you need to have a good mental focus as it is very enduring. I suggets going on runs in hilly areas to make your legs adapt to the sort of conditions faced in xc

You dont have to wear goofy shoes but they do fit well

  4. I am now a senior in high school and starting my second year of XC. Freshman year i did sprinting and same with sophmore but last year i decided to try XC. First of all, you can definately do it. I doubt i would have gotten 6 45 when i was your age. I have asthma and hadnt run more than a mile at a time b4 joining the XC team. The crowds can get intense, especially at the championship runs. It is hard but it is also a lot of fun and rewarding. Practices range from track workouts (mostly 600-1000 meter runs) to LSD (no not the drug, Long Slow Distance). The most i ran last year was 8 miles towards the end of the year. It was hard but it is so rewarding to know that i have completed those runs. The terrain isnt so bad, some bumps but you'll get over it. the upper classman will help you through the difficulties. I have nothing but good things to say about XC. It's awesome, even when i can barely stand up.

EDIT: hey, i like those shorts lol. Especially when i freeball it.

  5. At my school actually not a lot of people turned out. I think we have a total of 6 girls on our team and only 2 are freshmans (me and someone else).

It is a hard sport but it's 99% mental and only 1% physical. It's worth all of the benefits and is a wonderful sport. It will also keep you in shape for any other sport you want to play (and for track).

In practices (it depends on the coach though) we do weight training on Mon. Wednes. and Fri. then on Tues. and Thurs. we do abs and plyo's. Then we do Road Runs or Speed Work depending.

  6. well i am also a freshman doing cross country. but i was practicing with the team over the summer and all i can say is that its not that hard if u train for it. to prepare you should run at least a mile everyday. and also in the practice  guess what you do! You RUN! with a little stredtching in the begining
