I would like a unit that will map out the best route automatically.Does anyone have any recommendations for a unit that does this well? -- And still be in the lower price range.

Look for a unit that does the "travelling salesman" solution.  Assuming that time (and gas) is money for your driver and you'd like the device to pick the optimal route for those multiple stops, that's a key thing.

Relatively few of the Garmin dashtops do it;

My StreetPilot 2720 and 2610 do it and the top-end of the Nuvi (760/780) will do it.   There may be other models.

I haven't found any of the "lower price range" models that do it.
