I am interested in surgery. Can I view one without being a doctor?

I want to write my MCATs this spring because I am interested in surgery as a profession. The only thing I'm worried about is that after all the schooling and testing is complete, I won't be able to hack the actual surgery aspect of the profession.

  1. Try youtube, sounds dumb but you could find anything on there. I'm considering doing surgery as well, at first i was worried about that too, but you dont just go from a classroom to cutting people open youll start out watching someone else doing all the gory stuff. After a while you'll be used to it.

  2. you can watch them over the web, but watching it and doing it are two different things. When you have the ability to end someones life by a simple slip, you are completely immersed in the job at hand. nothing else. just the job you have to do.

  3. You will not get an idea of what surgery is like by watching one.

In the OR, you are totally immersed in what you are doing. Things that look gory to a bystander are not even noticed, so long as things are under control.  I have scrubbed on 12 hour surgeries, never felt hungry, never aware of a need to void, nothing but the problem before us. And you don't get tired until after the operation is over.  So the viewpoints of a bystander and a participant are totally different.  When you do your surgical rotations in Medical school you will find out if it is for you.
