I am thinking along the lines of a tank crew member, but I really would like some suggestions. What jobs are not always getting shot at or have a lower risk of seeing enemy fire? What jobs are the funnest? Any info is greatly appreciated.

  1. Your best chance of not getting shot at would be in the Air Force.  Unless you are on flying status, there is very little risk of combat.  There are more people that want to be on flying status than they need, so avoiding it would be no problem.

When I was in the Air Force people were in Finance, Food Service, Air Police, Communications, photography and other white collar type jobs.

I was assigned to the Auditor General's Department and spend my time in Texas, Georgia and South Carolina.

  2. My answer is going to sound odd but give me a chance. The most fun to me at least is being in the **** itself. So I went Airborne (you can't beat jumping out of a plane). You said you don't want to get shot at so it wouldn't be a bad idea for you either. The great thing is that with the way war is today the insurgents are smart enough not to shoot at Infantry because they know the Infantry will hand it to them 10 fold. They usually attack support jobs like medics, transportation, logistics. The other way to look at it is like this. Lets say you do get shot at, would you rather be stuck in a humv with a group of cooks or a group of guys who would kick some insurgent ***?

  3. What are you being offered? That will give you an idea of what the Army sees in you, as far as your aptitudes. Key decision is to complete this sentence. "I am joining the Army to ...........". That will give you your best guidance.

  4. You could become a medic, 68W. that is what i'm planning to do when i grow up. But hugh sausage has a point. I don't know. I am still thinking on what to do, but take your time, and follow your heart. Ask yourself, is this what you really want to do?

  5. Hmmmmm.. You might like being an unmanned UAV pilot. You get to be on base and command the UAV like any other remote control plane.. Except the UAV might have hellfire missiles on it. Or maybe a diver but its hard training. But do what you think will be fun..No one can make this decision for you.

  6. Being a tanker has its cool side and its crappy side.

Cool- driving a 70 ton steel beast with a 1500HP jet engine that will knock the poo out of someone 4 kilometers away. Not walking everywhere like the crunchies (infantry).

Not cool- throwing tracks, wash racks, pulling packs, ied attacks...

But I too agree with Hugh Sausage. Yeah, we're a combat MOS but if your'e gonna go to war, would you rather be in a convoy full of MRE laden trucks armed with -maybe- a caliber 50? Or be a trained maneuver combat soldier rolling 4 tanks deep, with some dismount support from the blue-cord types.

Many of my soldiers love thier job, and they take pride in being tankers. The officers that lead them go through the longest and hardest officer basic course in the army.(except for aviators). Tanker and Scout NCO's are probably some of the smartest guys i know, and they have to be, because there's a lot to know.
