The turf has been lifted, now i will gig down another 100mm or approx ready for laying the ready mixed concrete.

Is it necessary to lay anything on to the dug out earth, such as hardcore before pooring the concrete?

  1. Given good ground, mass concrete can be placed directly onto a damp-proof membrane over the prepared sub-grade. For heavier applications, or on bad ground, it may be advisable to construct a sub-base of compacted granular material or lean-mix concrete beneath the actual concrete slab, or to lay a sub-base over a geo-textile. On soft or unreliable ground conditions, a sub-base will help spread the load of a mass concrete slab, but in such conditions it's best to obtain a professional opinion from a civil or structural engineer. Local Authorities will advise on local conditions and reputable companies.

  2. no hardcore needed just make sure you compact any soft earth , if over 2m you should put in expansion joints to stop cracking and lifting, you can use 6x1remembering to take out while still green, in theory you should use re-bar to strengthen but you are not landing a plane on it so no prob,

  3. You can lay hard core in the bottom, but this is only really used to take up the space so you don't have to use so much concrete, there is no need for it though.

  4. The principle of concreting for heavy duty traffic is as follows:- Excavate 250mm to allow for 100mm of type one crushed concrete as a substructure base ensure that a whacker plate is used. Then pour 150mm of 4in 1 concrete mix to a brushed or trowelled finish. 10mm gauge reinforced mesh is also adviseable to alleviate any cracking.

  5. Depends where you live. Some places you need planning permission.  Others you need just building regs... I think you should stop and ask someone at the planning office before you go any further.

  6. God yes you need 9 inches or so of hardcore first or the concrete will crack and break up!

  7. Sand is good.

  8. Why such athickness of concrete? 100mm would be sufficient.

  9. Does depend on location , soil conditions & if frost is an issue.

Your readymix supplier should be able to advise as to what is typical in your area & may be able to supply materials for   a gravel bed & steel mesh if reqd.

If my conversion is right , that's almost 6" which is fairly thick even for N.East US where freezing is a consideration & a parking pad might be only  4" or so w'/ reinforcement.

Could save a little cash  if local  conditions & regs  permit a thinner pour.

Would also see what recommendations are for trowelling in expansion joints .

    Best regards

  10. Yes..You need to lay hardcore down.
