    This is probably a bit late for your trip, but maybe it will help you on your return trip.  

    If you have a portable DVD player, surprise them with a couple new movies.  Same idea for a handheld game such as Nintendo DS

    Short stories such a the Chicken Soup series of books are a good length for reading aloud.

    Books on tape.  We like Chronicles of Narnia.

    Snacks.

    Puzzle or word search books.
