  1. Are you going as a VOLUNTEER?  Or are you working for pay?  If you are going as a volunterr you do not need an FM3 visa...you can go for 180 days on a tourist card which you will get on the plane or at the border.  if you are working for money, you MUST have awork permit, which means you must have an FM# visa...the employer must write a letter stating he is hiring you for a job he cannot find a Mexican national for...he must sponsor your FM3 visa.  If you are going as a volunteer with a charitable organization...they should know if there are any other special requirements.    If you are FLYING to aand from Mexico, you MUST have a passport. Passports are not yet required for LAND travel to and from Mexico..the date for this has not been set et, but may be as soon as next summer.  Since you may be there then..you really SHOULD go ahead and get a passport.  See 1st site below to read about visas for volunteer work and paid work , you will need to click on " I would like to visit Mexico."...you will also need to go talk to the nearsest mexican consulate.  See 2nd site for all Passport info.

  2. If you are going to be there 6 months you will need to get a FM-3 resident alien status and you will need a current passport in order to apply for it... or to come back into the U.S. for that matter.
