Question:

I am legally blind only in my right eye. Does this disqualify me from joining the Army?

I wear corrective lenses, and about two years ago i had a detached retina in my right eye, a result of trauma. Three unsuccessful surgeries, and i currently have no vision in my right eye. My question is, I have wanted to go into the military since i was a child, I am currently 19 years old. Does this vision issue automatically disqualify me from all jobs/duties related to any branch of the military? Or is there SOMETHING, ANYTHING that i can do? I don't care what it is, as long as it is military related. Thanks in advance!

  1. You might be able to join an auxiliary service for the USCG, Civil Air Patrol Navy Sea Cadet Corp, there's a Marine unit, and possibly the army as well. The Coast Guard auxiliary does boat training and some inspection of vessels. CAP does a lot of stuff, from training kids to helping with aircraft accident search and rescue. Navy Sea Cadet Corp has an officer corp that helps train kids and like CAP is very militaristic in its structure.I was a midshipman in Sea Cadets and taught kids stuff out of a book that was provided to me and got uniforms and had a chance to go to boot camp as an instructor. Since I relocated I'm thinking of getting into CAP since they have it in my area. You may not be able to enlist but there are plenty of opportunities to help out.

  2. Yes. You are disqualified from entry into the military. First of all, a history of a detached retina (even if surgically corrected) is disqualifying.

The first source below is the medical standard. Secondly, the worst in the way of corrected vision you can have in the worse eye with 20/20 in the better eye is 20/400. Yours is 20/ l.p. (light perception only). The second source below is the medical standard for the vision issue.

However, you can apply and qualify for a position as a Department of Defense civilian employee working on various military bases.

  3. Sorry you can't join the military.

Try this site for jobs that usually work with the military....http://www.usajobs.gov/

  4. I am sorry to tell you but you have to more or less have 20/20 vision for aiming and stuff when you join. Maybe if you got a less active one in the army like a cook or something. unless you have the right requirements then you wont get in.

  5. YES
