1. When I read your question I get the impression that you might live in the Netherlands illegally.

If so, bite the bullet and apply for legal status, (very rare to get it though) or move to a country where someone of your nationality may live without visa and work permits. Your native country is the best bet for that.

You will find live hard anywhere unless you have work permits and live legally.

If I read too much in your question, forgive me.

When you are legal in the Netherlands, try to get a better job rather than moving countries to a place where you have to start anew.

You will find that in most of Europe there is more unemployment and less jobs to get, and that the wages will not be higher, relative to the cost of living. In most of Europe they are much lower indeed.

So I did read too much in your question, sorry about that.

If you find it hard to live in the Netherlands with the money an engineer brings home, try to live in Slovakia living from the money a local trained engineer brings home, you will want to race back to here.

I talked with a friend there, as a trained secondary school teacher with about 5 years experience she earns about 300 Euro per month. Not enough to live from, not even there.

So unless you can earn a western European salary while living in Eastern Europe you are likely best of staying in the Netherlands.

    Added-2:

Australia is much cheaper to live, indeed, but the pay is much lower too.

At the end of the month you will have a little money left over, but when you go outside the country you live you will find that the money you have saved is not going to take you anywhere.

If you want to have an easier time to live, search for countries where the income is higher compared to the cost of living.

The USA used to be the place, as you pay less tax there and you can decide whether to invest money into your old age and health insurance.

But with the dollar at an all time low I am not sure going to the USA would be a wise move at this time.

Maybe one of the emerging economies might be better, if you are willing to do with less for a few years to come.

But I stay with my point, earn a western European income and live in a country where the income is low.

Either as consultant working for western companies or by living in one country while working in an other. Or best, by working for a west European company stationed in the east or on an other continent.

  2. Chief! It is getting expensive everywhere! I live in Hong Kong! Nothing in Europe can be more expensive than HK. Holland is one of the easiest countries to live in. People are not racist. They are very tolerant...a little less of late but 100 times better than racist countires like Germany, Switzerland, UK, France etc. Stay where you are!

  3. Personally I don't agree that it is "hard" to live in the Netherlands but I guess that is just a point of view.

Tax levels are relatively high, but not as high as e.g. Scandanavia. However you see this back in the standard of healthcare, public transport, education, police-ing, etc (which is considerably higher than countries with low taxation).

If you travel around most of Europe you will see that there is no such thing as Utopia where it is "easy" to live, where incomes are high, and then taxes & living costs are low, but services and the standard of living are good.... (otherwise it would be very densly populated by now!)

Basically salaries and living costs are relative to one another. The only thing you may be able to do, is to live in one country near the border, and commute to work in a second, (as long as they are both EU countries), but then this is sometimes more complex than it is worth if you are e.g. a home owner and want to claim tax rebates

Also you need to consider the viability of obtaining employment (and a career) depending on your language options. This would make things "expensive" if you cannot get a job at a decent level

Sometimes the grass may seem to be greener on the other side, but upon closer inspection, needs cutting as well.
