  1. Heat the water for some time or add baking/washing soda (I am not sure)

Hope this helps. Plz select the best answer if it helps

  2. For potable water, it is desirable to bring down the hardness of water to below 600mg/litre.

There are two types of hardness:

    (i) Temporary hardness

    (ii) Permanent hardness

The former is known as carbonate hardness and it is mainly due to the presence of bicarbonate of calcium and magnesium.

The latter is known as non-carbonate hardness and it is mainly due to the presence of sulphates, chlorides and nitrates of calcium and magnesium.

    Removal of hardness:

    Temporary hardness:

The temporary hardness of water can be removed either by boiling or by adding lime. Calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate are insoluble in water. They can, therefore be easily removed by sedimentation. Boiling of water on a large scale is impractible and uneconomical. Hence addition of lime is preferred to boiling for the removal of temporary hardness.

    Permanent hardness:

It cannot be removed easily from water. However, special treatment, known as water softening treatment is to be given to water. Some of the methods adopted for removal of permanent hardness are:

    (i) Lime-Soda process

    (ii) Zeolite process

    (iii) Demineralisation process

In the 1st method, lime and sodium carbonate or soda ash are used to remove permanent hardness. The other two processes can be carried out in package plants.

Apart from the above theory, I do suggest you to harvest rainwater and feed into well so that the chemicals contributing to hardness get diluted and level of hardness reduced.

Further, I would like to suggest you to contact water testing laboratories of TWAD Board for analysis of water sample to find out the type and level of hardness in water and to obtain expert opinion for removal of hardness.

Hope this would help you better.

  3. You can add sodium bicarbonate i.e. baking soda to it.

    Hope this helps.

  4. If it's just for drinking then you need to buy an evaporator.

If you buy a water softner you may have more problems later.
