I am looking at buying an apartment in New York City. What areas should one avoid?

I have seen some apartments in upper east side. How is this area to live? Are there many coffee shops and vegetable and fruit stands?

The Upper East side is great!   I love it wayyyy better than the West side.  There are tons of stores, quiet residential areas.  There are tons of fruit/veg stands on 2nd Ave, the best hospitals in New York City on York Ave, shopping on Lex, Park and Madison, schools, churches, you name it, the Upper East side has it.  5th Ave, the Metropolitan Museum and the Frick.  Plus great access to Central Park.

i would assume you have a large sum of money to spend since any apartment in Manhattan is very expensive, however the upper east side is outrageous. aside from that it is a great place to live and yes there are many coffee shops and fruit and veg stands. there is also everything else you could possible want. good luck and enjoy.

Carnegie Hill is on the upper east side, and it's beautiful. Very residential, quiet by NYC standards - but it still has a good share of shops, restaurants, fruit stands, etc.

It's several blocks from the closest subway. But you also have buses that run up and down 2nd and 3rd avenues.

You'll find lots of families, students, professionals and retirees living in this area. Compared to the rest of Manhattan, I found it to be one of the more affordable areas. (Still expensive, but not as expensive as Soho or Gramercy.)

Well almost all areas in New York are all expensive. I know a couple of people who pay 5,000 a month!
