I already have a children's python who will be 2 in november and have had 2 coastal carpet pythons that have died because they never ate for me (were brought from the same breeder).I am looking at purchasing another snake and was wondering what types of snakes people could reccomend, taking into consideration they need to be able to able to surivive in Central Queensland (Australia) along the sounthern coast region.

  1. A ball python is a great snake. No offense to reptilelover, but don't go with a reticulated python, because they get 20+ feet (up to 33) and can weigh 300+ pounds. A ball python is a fair sized (3-6 feet), and fun to own snake. Mine is a great eater, and LOVES to be held. Every time I walk in the room she some up to the front to the cage. Here is a good care sheet for a ball python -

    I hope this helps.

  2. For first time snake owners the *best* is the ball python. They're such friendly and loving snakes, and won't overpower you with size or an appetite.

Contrary to popular belief, most household pet snakes CAN'T and WON'T target people as prey, and usually aren't bit or "eaten".

  3. How long did you leave the poor things starve before you did anything about it?

Hatchling pythons are capable of surviving anywhere up to 8 months without food - you should have had plently of time to do everything in your power to get them feeding which includes a trip to the vet or force feeding if you have to.

I have never ever heard of a coastal dying from starvation in captivity, there is always something that can be done to save it.. Maybe you should ask yourself whether you are ready for another snake and can look after it properly this time.

However I assume you are in Australia, some pythons you might consider are :

    - another childrens

    - stimson

    - spotted

    - coastal

    - bredli

    - murrary darling

Sorry to sound harsh but im still in shock that you let this happen to the two coastals. There are so many things that could have been tried and trialed to get them feeding. Sounds a pretty dodgy breeder also if he sold two non feeders to someone who is relatively new to reptiles.

  4. reticulated python, ball, my fav the bumble bee python
