I have been sick feeling my ankles abd feet are so swollen I can't get shoes on. My Doctor took blood work andmy sed rate came back 60. What is normal and what should I do?

  1. Sed rate, or erythrocyte sedimentation rate is a general indicator of inflammation, and cannot test for any specific disease; rather it helps in diagnosis.  

    A normal ESR for women is < 20 mm/h and men < 15 mm/h (slightly higher if you are over 50).  Your ESR is slightly elevated, so your doctor should be doing further tests, especially with the swelling in your feet.

  2. Normal sed rate should be less than 20mm/hour. It's a non-specific test for inflammation. Another test we use is C-reactive protein. With the symptoms you describe you will need a CBC, Chem panel, Rheumatoid panel, UA, Thyroid panel and probably some other tests depending on what your doctor is searching for.
