Not really a chess game so to speak, but just a board that I can place pieces on the squares and work out examples from books...

Anything out there to speak of?

  1. I assume you mean a free chess software game that will allow you to set up and play out problems...

"Winboard" is a free program that will allow you to set up and work out problems (plus, you can play a regular game with it as well).

    Here's a link to a download site

Winboard is for Windows systems... "XBoard" (also shown on this site) is for Linux systems.

Winboard does work in Windows Vista, that web site was put together before Vista came out, so it only goes up to XP as far as listing the  operating systems in which the program will work.

You can also download a program called "Der Bringer"... it's also a free program and very good.  You'll need to select the "English" version of the program (its programmer is German).

  2. I don't really understand your question.  You can put positions in any program.  These are free:

  3. I think so, go to a store and buy the game called, of all things, chess.
