  1. You didn't say you were riding "down hill" so I will answer as if you are not riding - ski resorts in the summer. Down hill bikes are bullet proof & heavy and climbing doesn't usually matter either becasue they are made to only go downhill fast and not break.

YOu asked for a trail or all mountain bike (or XC if you want a light one that is a good climber)

For around $1K. Lots of Hard tail choices. Not so many Full Susp choices, allot of big brands start higher than that. but in my opinion you can still get a great bike for around $1K.

Do you have a preferance? HArd tail or full?

Hard tails - better at climbing and better components at same price point for a full susp ride.  Will force you to build skills (less forgiving)

http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/moto... - 22 lbs....lots of hi end specs on paper...some favorable magazine articles too..i think but online only unless you live near a cyclespectrum.

ANd tons of other hard tail choices too.....

Full's suspension ones - better at taking big hits...and easier on your body always & can be heavier at same price point as equivalent Hard tails. The rear suspension can compensate some for lack of skill - and allow you to ride out of cased landings...an not so nice situations ...that a non skilled rider on a hard tail would not be able to do.
