  1. You might also check with ChildFind in your area - they are actively looking for children like your child to help.  Federal law (IDEA) requires that school districts offer services to children with any kind of disability from the age of 3 until 22, so your child could get help there.

As far as the board, Boardmaker is wonderful, but it may not be concrete enough for a 3 year old.  You may have to use actual objects with the pictures or photographs for your child to understand that the picture represents the object.

  2. Boardmaker (software) is what we use in the school system to make communication boards for students.

When I worked in the nursing home I drew communication boards for residents.

You can create a board with a digital camera and a printer. Mount or insert the pictures on a document page, slip it into a plastic sleeve, and make changes when you need to.

For very young students we used to make pictures about the size of a large note card, laminate each one, and hook them together with a metal ring (shower curtain ring will work). Then the child has a communication booklet.

  3. You can make a communication board for the child.  Go to

this website,  Board Maker has software to make your own or buy professional equipment.  I suggest making your own for now since he is so young.  You can increase the complexity of the technology as your child ages.

If I can e of any further assistance, please contact me.  I have a professional site, where I can assist you in a more private forum.

  4. You can make one pretty easily.

Take photos of all the things which are relevant to the child. You may want to start small with one topic (say food/drink, toys, family members)

Get a board - you can use wood or plastic

Cover the board in a fabric which has loops (a wool material, or a felt)

Glue velcro pieces on to the back of the photos.

You can now put the photos on the board where they will stick.

If you are working with large quantitys of photos you will need somewhere to store them which is easily accessible and usable by the person working with the child (a folder with plastic pockets or a box would be good.)

If you are working with more than one category you could use dividers (in a folder) or put the photos in sandwich/lunch bags (brown paper ones) to keep them seperate from each other.

  5. Do you have a speech therapist-they shold be helping you with this-

    you can go low tech-

find a old board game-break teh board in half-cover with plain paper or just use teh back-

take photographs or use clipart to depict words your child needs-

you can  velcro the pictures on so that are interchangable and your child can take it off and hand it to you as a verbal exchange

There are expensive devices that say teh word for your child (that you record0 when a button is pressed-

    google

    augmentative communication
