I don't know what to do other than research comparisons that scuba and surf mags have put to the test.

Your local surf shop should be able to give you some more info. Their prices wont be as cheap as a sporting goods store though. I know Body Glove and O'Neill are very popular.

  2. Many of the people I know that surf in Northern California use a 5 mm thickness wetsuit, although I also know others that get by in a 3 mm. Since you'll be actively moving on top of the water, you'll want something that is flexible in the extremities while providing good insulation across your torsoe. You might want to stop in at a surf shop (Cowell's in Santa Cruz comes to mind) and rent a wetsuit. That way, you can try before you buy.
