So, I really do not like any red wine that I have tasted. I would like to start to drink it though. I guess I am looking for a nice smooth wine that do not have a bite, I really do not like the wine that has a bite. I also do not want to spend a lot of money. Do you have any suggestions?

  1. For what you are looking for I would suggest

La Crema Pinot Noir a very nice and smooth California wine..$42

If you are looking for something less expensive try:

Carpineto "Dogajolo" or Monte Antico red

both are nice Italian Super Tuscans at about $10 ea.

  2. Check out the book "Wine Trials" by Robin Goldstein. He has conducted hundreds of blind tastings which pitted inexpensive wines against expensive wines. In the book he lists 100 wines that cost under $15 and were preferred to wines that cost much, much more by tasters who had varying degrees of wine expertise. It's a shocking book and is really fun to read and you will end up both finding an inexpensive red wine that you'll love and a way to find many wines that you will love and be able to afford.

  3. Lambrusco Riunite. It is so delicious, you can go through the entire bottle and not know it.

  4. Hyo makes some very good points.

Red wine is an acquired taste and you will begin to enjoy it more with time.

Remember that wine is meant to be consumed with food, especially reds which have bolder flavor. Try your next red with a meal.

Whatever you do, don't start with a Cabernet. You may want to avoid those all together. I've enjoyed red wine for years and still have difficulty finding a Cabernet I really like. They have the most tannins which produce that bite you describe.

I would begin with a Gamay (Boujalais in FrancBeaujolaisprobably the lightest red you'll find.

Merlots are a bit heavier, but can be smooth. Zinfandels are also a bit heavier, but can be fruitier.

I'd avoid Pinot Noir because you'll need to pay more to get a really good bottle.

Syrah/Shiraz are delicious but again a bit heavier.

    Good luck.

  5. I'm not sure that wine exist.  Smooth red wine is almost an oxymoron.  That said, I think you probably should look for red wines that have good acidity and soft tannins.  You won't find any in California.  Try a Beaujolais Villages.  Its red but has nice crispness (acidity that makes your mouth water - called juicy in wine lingo) and just enough tannins to give is it some body.  Plus you could have it chilled.  My other favorite is a Dolcetto d'Alba from Italy for much the same characteristics.  You should be able to get both for under 10 bucks.  By the way, my 2 cents on California reds.  Overly aggressive tannins, its the bite that turns the back of your mouth into a black hole.  You want balance, it softens the bite.  Good Luck
