  1. You can just buy them in National Bookstore when you come here. If you will allow me, I can forward to you Lesson No. 1 ;)

    GOD BLESS YOUR TRIP!!!!!!

  2. What you need is a simple English-Tagalog phrasebook for quick reference. They have one in Amazon for $10 up

My American friend learned the basic phrases and words first and after a year living in the Philippines, he can understand Tagalog conversations but awkwardly pronounces Tagalog words.

  3. Forget about it.  They will just laugh at you if you speak their language.  Learn it just to know what they are saying about you.  I found Tagalog and Bisaya very useful to know who my friends are

  4.    Go to any branch of the National Book Store.   Ask the Salesperson for a good English - Tagalog book.

Or you can make an e-mail inquiry at info@nationalbookstore.com.ph

        Have a nice day !

  5. If you are just going on a trip there is no need to buy such a book or to even learn Filipino (or any other Philippine language) because most Filipinos speak English, with varying fluencies. Those in the cities are generally as fluent as an average American, while in the towns and outside of the cities, you can get by easily.

In fact, most of the upper class Filipinos speak English as their primary language without any knowledge of Filipino (and yet they survive in the Philippines) - expatriates don't see the need to learn Filipino at all and many reside and leave the Philippines without even learning a sentence or two in Filipino!

Spanish can also help, because a lot of everyday words in Filipino/Tagalog are borrowed from Spanish. Examples are coche (car), derecho (straight), escuela (school), parque (park), calle (road), cilla (chair), jefe (chief), barrio (village), and about 5,000 more Spanish words.

But if you really want to learn the language to acquire lots of Filipino friends, then you can learn it through books. Lots of people found Paraluman Aspillera's Basic Tagalog very useful, and it has helped hundreds of foreigners to fluently speak and write in Tagalog. Buy the Philippine edition of the book (it is only US$ 1.00 here compared to the international edition printed in Japan, which is US$ 14.00-US$ 20.00)

In the advanced level, you can also buy Fr. Leo English's English-Tagalog Dictionary, by far the most complete dictionary for foreigners on the language (1100+ pages).
