  1. As a sewing machine technician and collector I can sadly honestly say I don't beleive there are any sewing machines made in the U.S. anymore. Most machines are now made for American companies such as Singer, Sears Kenmore, etc. in Asia.

But on a different note, since about 50 years ago (other than Singer) the best machines were never made in the U.S.

Now the best are Bernina (Switzerland) and Husqvarna/Viking in Sweden. Not to say asian machines are bad, Janome is good and now makes the Kenmores and others.

Sorry hubby, no U.S. machines unless you get an older one. The best machine last made in the U.S. is a Singer 401, or 500 or 503.  (1957 - 1961) in my professional opinion. 20 years as a sewing machine collector and technician.

  2. I believe the only company in the US making sewing machines still is Merrow, and they're industrials -- they're inventors of the serger.

There are some excellent machines out there, though, that are not US made.

You may want to poke around at http://www.patternreview.com 's sewing machine review section when you get your machine choices narrowed.  Some of my friends who do machine embroidery prefer to have separate embroidery and sewing machines -- they can keep sewing while a design is stitching out.  I only do hand and free motion embroidery, so I haven't looked at embroidery machines.
