  1. Well, you have two issues not one.  First, the router / access point will need an outdoor antenna which is elevated high enough to be "line of site" for those 5 blocks. That really isn't all that difficult if you are in flat territory or live on a hill! There are several companies that make these devices.

    Check with http://tranzeo.com or http://proxim.com or http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collater...

    etc.

However, to receive and connect to that AP the other end has to also be able to reach that 5blocks. A normal computer wifi card won't! So you need to add a directional radio card / antenna to your computer as well! It also has to be "line of site".  If you are indoors, that will be very difficult! You can get CPEs (client premise equipment) which connects outdoors and brings the wireless indoors on ethernet but it isn't portable!  Bottom line, you won't do this with off the shelf gear like linksys or netgear! You can check http://radiolabs.com for some cards that might help but you won't find those at your local stores! Sorry.

Your other option is to setup a community MESH network, using several specialized AP/Backhaul radios to generate a local community network which covers the area. You will need several locations to put these units (also outdoors) and the software to control them.

  2. Net Gear WI FI fine work with Link Sys Router
