As another alternative, see if you can arrange to rent/borrow someones garden. Often older folk cannot look after large gardens and would be glad  to share part or  the whole, and also welcome the social interaction. From your perspective, there is someone to watch over your plot whilst you are absent. Win-Win all round. I've seen 'requests' in both directions on my local Yahoo freecycle website. Perhaps there is a similar site in your locality. Best of Luck.

I've got a large one in Shropshire, for which I am looking for someone to share.

Joking apart, the town authorities normally set aside public land for allotments, there must be some near you, Check with town hall.
