I am looking for an alternitive to carpet for my stairs?

something that does not cost the earth ,as i have a pet and children ,i am having nightmares trying to keep it clean any ideas? the stairs are fairly new (4years old) but i have carpet on at the moment.

dont change it , my friend has wood stairs and the noise drives her parents crazy, mine is carpet: i never realized it blocks so much noise

Bare wood (gets dirty very quickly). Paint wears away quite quickly so does varnish. cant think of any thing else.

I would keep to the carpet. Just had a customer today who had an open plan, lovely wooden staircase and he got me to cover it with carpet. The reason: he fell down the stairs a few weeks ago and hurt himself. Bare wooden stairs can be very dangerous!; keep to the carpet on the stairs, its safer, reduces noise and looks better in my opinion. Stair runners are becomming very popular at the moment. Go to your local carpet shop and get a few quotes.

I wouldnt get rid of the carpet - the noise from the kids going up and down the stairs would be really annoying. you could try painting the stairs and having a runner down the middle with carpet rods, or you could put the runner over the carpet with carpet rods.

You could get a nice runner with a nice design on it at Home Depot & get the ends re-finished
