  1. Buy a map.

  2. I got a Garmin Nuvi 300 from Tesco for £100. It is more than adequate for my occasional use.  The screen is nicely sized and plenty bright enough, the interface is intuitive, the voices are clear and the volume has a good range of adjustment. The map is only UK & Ireland but I'm unlikely to go further than that. As a bonus you can fit an SD memory stick and play MP3 and WMV files or listen to audio books too.

If you want full European coverage, a wide screen, faster or more complex route planning be prepared to pay more. Can't say much about the £60 jobs that are hitting the high street but there must be some sacrifices in the specifications somewhere. Have a look at http://www.ciao.co.uk for many more reviews on everything you can buy.
