  1. Why get an off brand when name brands have so many more parts and services available?

  2. I believe you will be better served by buying a used bike from a known popular brand rather than an off brand like Kazuma.  Much like cars, there are always service items needed on a motorcycle, and the availability of parts and technicians is much more important than initial purchase cost.

It won't do you any good to buy a cheaper model new if you can't find the parts and technicians that support that model.  Buying a used bike from a popular manufacturer assures you that there is a broad supply of parts and knowledge available, plus the resale value will be much higher on a known brand than one that is unknown.

  3. you get what you pay for !

  4. Run on down to pepboys...

I bought my son (who was 12 at the time) a DR125 made by Baja Motorsports. Its about the size on a standard 80 frame...not as big as the old 2 stroke 125's. It was perfect for his size (he was about 5 foot tall at the time)

They have a DR250  if your son is older than mine was, or they have a DR50 for around 400 if your son is young.

If your son is 15 or 16 and you are wanting to get him a dirtbike, go get one he won't soon out grow. But if he is younger, and short like mine was...I can't see walking into Honda or Suzuki and paying 3 grand for a bike that he will out grow in a year or two.

I got the DR125 for like 700 bucks, maybe 8 with tax and set up. Its down in the barn right now... Last Christmas I went back to PepBoys and bought my son (who just turned 15) a DuneRunner 250 Dune Buggy... thing is UNREAL... I gave I think 2200 for it on sale, two seater with a 250 quad engine on it..top speed of 40 mph, full suspension...even has a cigarette lighter on it.

He pretty much never gets off of the Dune Buggy now, so the DR125 just kind of sits in my work shop, but every once in a while he still gets it it, or I will get it out and play around on it. Its not loaded with power like the old 2 strokes, but I am 5'11 and weigh 190 pounds, it it lugs me around ok.... its frame is too small for me, but I can still ride it with no problems.

Had it for about 3 years, it has 100's of hours on it, the plastics have held up and still look new, seat has held up, engine still runs great...tires still have full k***s... no issues what so ever. Starts on the first two kicks with no problem.

One thing I did do, when I first got the bike it felt just a little sluggish, this due to the break in settings on the carb, they run them rich...I let my son ride it for a couple of weekends and then I changed the oil, and leaned it out. They have a "restriction tab" welded to the end of the exhaust pipe...its just a little round tab that is tac welded in one spot and then open slightly to allow exhaust out, but cause enough restriction that the bike won't run lean and hot...I assume during break in.

I yanked that tab, and then tuned the carb and it makes a pretty big difference in the performance of the bike.

All and all it was a good buy, for a little under 800 bucks my son certainly got his use out of it, and I could probably sell it and get half of my money back.

  5. be more specific, how big is the kid and what expereience, etc.

  6. suzuki.

    Or a pocket rocket.

  7. Why would you buy something you will have trouble getting parts for?

A used Kawasaki is better than a new, cheaply made imitation any day!

  8. to  start off a 50-80cc honda is a great thing. Then a honda xr 100 are good if he's about 5'1 to fit it.then a suzuki is good is they are under 250cc.

  9. KTM is a must
