Check out the Langtang Valley, almost directly north of Katmandu. The travel time is much smaller that treks in the Everest region or Annapurna. It is about a 3-4 day hike to the uppermost town in the valley, along a glaciel river. There are tea house and hostels in various spots the whole way up, and a guide is not needed(If you are an experienced hiker). There are numerous trails that actually wind down from Langtan to Katmandu, but we were so beat, we didn't try any of those.
