I grand-fathered into my CDL in 92' and didn't have to do all that c**p, but I have heard if you don't do the pre-trip IN ORDER as on the diagram and be able to tell the instructor WHY you are looking at this and that, you will fail.

Also, ask at your local truck driving school, they may have the checklist w/ diagrams available.  Look in the Motor Carriers Road Atlas.  It has a list of what to look for during a pre trip.  If you are studying for your CDL, practice, practice, practice when you get the diagrams.  Develop a rhythm since brakes & wheels repeat what seems like a gazillion times.  Good luck!!
