I am looking to spend under $1000 for a surround system, I have been looking at HTIB's like Onkyo HTSR800, Sony DAV-500 and Panasonic SC-PT960 among others... Should I stick with HTIB's or go for seperates? I watch movies as well as listen to music CD's.

  1. No HTIB will ever match the audio quality of going with seperates.  For under 1,000 I would get a Onkyo 605 for 300.00, Best Buy Insignia speakers (70.00/pair) so six would be 210.00 and a SVS PB-NSD10 internet direct sub for 450.00 and 90.00 for a DVD player.

This would kill any HTIB system you could buy for the same amount of money.

  2. go for seperates!!! no all in ones. i have an onkyo ht-r320 and it sounds great. i love it and i got 2 of my family members interested in it just by playing movies for them. its very cost efficient too. youll be looking at like 400 dollars all hooked up and ready to go

  3. depends..

  4. You actually have quite a few choices for a system for that price level.

You should start by looking over the choices on amazon.com, where you can find deals such as a Polk 6750 5.1 speaker system (List price of $599) for $225.12 plus $35 shipping. A Yamaha RX-363BL 500 watt 5.1 receiver can be had for $199.95, free shipping. That would get you a nifty system for under $500. If you want to spend more than that, then you can look for more expensive gear there.

In speakers, I would recommend brands that include Infinity, JBL, and Polk. In receivers, brands that include Denon, Harmon Kardon, Yamaha, and Onkyo are good value for the $. Avoid all Bose, and Sony.
