  1. Did you look in ancestry.com for him? There are several places you could look. Have you just put his name in search for information on him. I did this and found some family one time. I hope you can get the information you want on him. Good Luck!!!

  2. Hi Lorna,

can you give any more details as to where in Ireland your grandfather came from? Do you have any certificates or papers at all? If you found him in Maine in the 1930 census, have you tried looking for things like landholders lists/rate lists, etc. I'm in Australia... what I would look for here is electoral rolls, rate notices, go to the National Archives to search for shipping lists and naturalisation papers. Sorry, I don't know the equivalents there. I would also look to see if he had done any military service.

What I can offer is the URL of a great Irish family history group, Y-IRL. It's free to join and is comprised of like minded people who are very willing to help each other.

Good luck. Please post all you know, so that we can help you further.

  3. Hi, just sent you an email , which I HOPE is about your grandfather. It shows his Declaration of Intent to become a US citizen, plus a couple other listings for military service in WW1 and with the RAF. The info below was on www.rootsweb.com:

    Bert HERBERT

Birth: 12 Mar 1891 in COUNTY CORK IRELAND

Death: 9 Apr 1951 in UNITED STATE VETERANS HOSPITAL

Burial: United States Veterans Cemetary TOGUS,MAINE

    His Father: JAMES HERBERT

    Mother:  MARGARET HERBERT

Address for Togus (Maine) National Cemetery:

VA Medical and Regional Office Center

    Togus

    Kennebec County

    Maine  USA

    Postal Code: 04330

    Phone: (508) 563-7113

(NOTE: There are over 2,000 people listed as being buried there, but I could not find him. However, you CAN go through www.findagrave.com and enter the info yourself. I put information on both my mom's parents on there, and then I can "visit" them any time I want, and they have what they call a "virtual cemetery" where you can leave "flowers", gifts, etc. in the form of pictures, of course. And you can leave messages, too.)
