  1. If you have the money, stay away from used cars. I suggest a Mazda 3. It has good fuel mileage, good safety rating, and good resale value when you decide to upgrade. Besides, they are really fun to drive. Also not bad looking either.

  2. Economical and reliable is what you need.  You don't list what your price range is, but definitely you should be looking at Honda Civics, Toyota Corollas. Maybe Ford Focus.  I think Chevy Aveo got the rating as the cheapest car to own and operate for the life of the car.

  3. I'm not a proponent of domestics but a Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner would be a good small SUV for a girl in college. It's got enough room for your stuff and your friends and it doesn't get shockingly bad fuel economy. Same story for the Hyundai Santa Fe.

A SAAB (it's an acronym, hence the capitalization) 9-3 sedan or 9-5 would be good if you've got a higher budget (they are also built like tanks -- trust me on this). An older Mercedes has an engine to last a lifetime so if you want a great deal and a reliable car, there's another option. Then of course all Hondas and Toyotas (minus the Yaris) are valid candidates. VWs can be hit or miss. Avoid the often-suggested Chevy Cobalt, as it is nothing worth the underwhelming performance and short lifespan.

There are just too many cars out there of all prices, shapes, and makes for us to suggest something that's perfect for your unique personality. You need to start from the ground up and figure out what you feel comfortable driving and then what you can afford. After you do that, come back and it'll be so much easier to give you specific ideas. Good luck.

  4. It depends on how much you can afford. How are you going to pay for this? Are you paying your living expenses too? Have you done the math on all this?

I'm somewhat perplexed because it's difficult enough to attend college full time and work enough to pay living expenses, much less tack a car payment on top of all that!

What are you going to school for? What can you expect to make when you get out? How much will your student loans total?  Will you be able to pay all this back and save for a house at the same time? If this sounds like a reality check, it is because car ownership is expensive, especially when you factor in insurance, repairs, gas at $4 a gallon, parking, etc.

You need to provide more financial specifics on your situation.

  6. How much do you wanna spend?

you could buy anything you want and take good care of it, so it'll last you a while.

you could get a hybrid and help save the environment.
