  1. Depends on what school you are looking for.  If its a high school,  your best bet is to call the Board of Education in that area.  You can easily find that information in the phone book or online.  Sometimes the records would be moved to their offices or it may have been moved to the new school.

Colleges can be tougher.  Call your state's Department of Education or visit their website.  Navigating a state site can be a little hard, but sometimes they will have a list of closed schools and where the records from that school are located and how to contact them.

If you are international, try contacting your government's dept. of education.  They could have the contact information you will need to obtain the records.

Check the link I found for New Jersey's closed and renamed schools.  Usually states have similarly named lists.

If you need a document that shows that your college closed, visit the second link.  It includes the date your school closed.
