I live out in the country and have our own sewer underground. The problem is the ground retains alot of water coming from irrigation pipes coming from sewer tank and when it rains, well it gets really muddy, turning into a big puddle of brown water. I am looking for plants/flowers with small roots (small roots so that way it wont bother irrigation pipes or go into the sewer tank underground) that can thrive on that much of water and maybe it will help reduce so much water in the ground espicailly during rainy seasons.. All this is in Kansas, lower part of east.

  1. Canna lilies love tons of water during their growing season and you could lift them in the fall/autumn as some of them do not like freezes etc, and can rot over winter.  http://www.pondsplantsandmore.com/Canna_... and http://www.pondsplantsandmore.com/Canna_...

Otherwise, look out for marsh and bog plants, including some of the carnivorous plants such as Sarracenia or Pticher Plant.  I grow some of these outdoors, sitting in water logged water, and they love it.  Look for the hardier varieties.   http://www.about-garden.com/a/en/1647-sa...

Arum lilies also like tons of water,  and are good marginal plants.   http://plants.thompson-morgan.com/produc...

Hope this helps.  Good luck!  Rob

  2. Check out the cardinal flower, it thrives in moist to wet soil and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. These are grown in Missouri so I know that they will do well in Kansas

Lobelia cardinalis, Cardinal Flower's brilliant fiery red flowers on dense spikes grow up to 4 feet tall to make this one of the showiest wildflowers.  The tubular cardinal red flowers lasts 4 to 6 weeks and are a favorite with hummingbirds and Sulphur butterflies.  Lobelia cardinalis is best planted in rich moist soil in full sun to light shade in a formal perennial bed, moist meadow, water garden, or as a container plant for a patio.  Grow Cardinal Flower in the butterfly garden, hummingbird garden and use as a cut flower.  The basal rosettes need sunlight in the winter so fallen tree leaves should be removed.  Wild Cardinal flower looks good when planted with Irises, Asclepias (Marsh milkweed), Hibiscus (Rose Mallow), Veronicastrum (Culver's-root), and Great Blue Lobelia.  Cardinal flower is a short-lived perennial but reseeds easily.  Cardinal flower seeds are very small and germinate without pretreatment.
