I am graduating this year with a degree in Education, but i want to teach special children. So, which school should i enroll in to have specialization or background in Special Education? Does it cost more than any other courses? How long will it take?

Thank you very much for your responses.

  1. I am a Spec.Ed./Resource teacher in CA. so can only speak as to what CA requires. I have a general education (multi-subject-K thru 9) credential as well as a SE (mild to moderate and K-12) credential and a separate Resource Certificate (also K-12). The current trend, in CA, however, is to have students wanting to teach SE take the SE tract during their under grad. work. From my point of view I like my credentials like they are as I can go back  to teaching in a general education classroom if I desire, but the "new" SE teachers would have to work to clear their multiple/single subject credentials before they would be eligible to.

There is also a move to begin mixing all the levels of need, into one credential. There will no longer be separate severe to mild and a mild to moderate credentials- just special education.

I hope this info will help you in your area. You might want to seek more information from your place of study or your state dept. of education.  Good luck.
