I am looking for some kind of virus protection for my computer. Can anyone please help me find one? I would like to have one that is free. I have already tried AVG and it didn't work to well for me. Every time I logged in it would pop up and say that it wasn't downloaded all the way or something in the matter. I tried downloading again and the same thing happen like 2 days later. So anyways....does anyone know some kind of protection that is good I could use. Thanks for your help and time!

  1. Forget AVG these two free programs are better (install only 1):

    1. Avast!

    a. Real-time protection

    b. It has an option to delete a virus once found

    c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.

Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface

    2. Avira AntiVir

    a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG

    b. It's cute umbrella icon

    c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses

    Cons: A very sluggish update

I advise against Norton anti-virus, it's bloated software that slows your computer down. The best anti-virus available is Kaspersky or NOD32 (recent tests at av-comparatives.org).

  2. I like NOD32 and Kaspersky.  I do not like Bitdefender, McAfee and Norton one bit.. NOD32 is very light on your system and very effective.  Kaspersky's detection rate is slightly higher than NOD's but it takes up more RAM.

  3. All Antivirus companies are racing for the same goal. To be better than the other. This means, the larger the company, the more expensive the software they sell, the better your chances of being protected.

Since much of the large business world is protected by Symantec Corporate, this give a HUGE advantage to Norton. Another really good one is Mcafee.

I personally like NOD, Trend Micro and Kaspersky AVs.

If your going to manage AV on 1000s of computers, nothing can compete with Symantec Corporate.

    Things you want -

    1) Real time protection (yes it slows your machine down, but YOU have to have it)

    2) Signitures updated every 24 hours (and makes sure that it does so)

    3) Full system scans each night

    4) Some type of Host Based Intrusion Detection Systems

All in All, no AV is better than another. Once a virus is found, they race to update their definitions first. Symantec/Norton will not be first all of the time... However, it DEFINITELY wont be AVG!

  4. Kaspersky.  It fought off all our viruses.

  5. Avast anti-virus better definitions, anti-spyware and anti-rootkit built in, faster and more reliable:

Setup Guide and easy to follow instructions:

Threatfire which runs alongside your antivirus enhancing your protection:

Scroll down and click on Get Free

Sorry AVG fans, but V8 is too bloated and with essential functions disabled, low detection rates and a resource hog.

Also bear in mind that free AV programs use the same definition files as the paid versions, the vendors hope that users will upgrade to the paid version, so if the definition files were less effective no one would ever upgrade.
