Its had the reputation as having more than its share of "white trash" due to its low priced housing in the past. Some parts are still a bit rough, but its improving. Handy if you like the beach or want a place that gets the maximum benefit from the on shore breeze (Fremantle Doctor) in the afternoon.

rockingham is a hugely built up new area, getting progressively bigger by the month. personally don't like it

Originally it was a seaside holiday town, and a fishing village.

Then in the 1960's after BP brought in a lot of immigrant workers from the UK it became a bit of a pommy suburb. Full of the usual English working class and skinhead kids.

During the 1960's Kwinana, Naval Base was developed as a Industrial / Port area and that still drives the economy of the area today.

Then in the 1970's the RAN built a huge Navy base on Garden Island and Causeway. A lot of Australian Navy families then moved there.

It stagnated for a while in the 1980's, but by the 1990's a lot of land was cleared of Unexploded Ordinance in Warnbro and land was released for subdivision and since then the whole area is developing really fast.

There's still a bit of the holiday village atmosphere from Kwinana beach along to Point Peron, and Penguin Island, but then since the 1990's there's a lot of new suburbs and a huge Shopping Centre that is open on Sundays, and a new rail line from Perth, so it has changed considerably.

If you can download 'Google Earth'.. it's really great.. you can tune in to anywhere on the planet..any area.. any street, and any house... it's that good. Well worth it.
