I am looking for information from anyone who worked or visited the Nevada State Mental Hospital between 1930-1940. We are searching for a family member who was buried there. It is reported at that time that records were not kept as to where the burial plots were. They reportedly only keep records for 8 years at the present. Anyone who may know something about this time period would be a help. Any information would be good.

  1. Check these sites for additional information:

just copy and paste the whole url into your browser...

    http://mhds.nv.gov/index.php?option=com_...

read the brief history and notice the change in name of the facility...

    http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cemete...

recommendation: contact the local genealogy society or main library and findout if either has archived copies of death records/cemetery records for this institution....often times a genealogy society, historical society, or genealogy department with a library will have documents of this type contributed by patrons...also don't overlook the libraries or archives of universities or colleges in the state....distance from the institution is not a factor.  And, be sure and check with the FHS library via the cataloque on www.familysearch.org/   there maybe a document or microfilm of one archived with them.

It would be helpful to determine "who" handled the burials for the institution...was it an outside funeral home or undertaker or the county coroner...if so there maybe records through the office.

Last, your relative's name is located on the 1930 census for this institution.... she was listed as age 61 at the time and born in Michigan ........ if you have a subscription to Ancestry.com you should be able to pull the info up....if you don't have subscription check with your local library who will most likely have an institutional subscription for use by patrons who come to main or local branch.

  2. One of my relatives was a patient that died and was buried at the Missouri State Mental Hospital.  I know that the cemetery there has very few markers, and most of them are just "anonymous" numbers.  I don't believe that they ever really kept track of who went with what number.  It doesn't really seem as if they cared about what happened to the patients after they died.  I hope you'll have more luck though.

  3. Don't know who you are looking for....but google "Nevada State Mental Hospital".  Several things came up with that search, and a couple of the sites that came up are regarding people that died there.
