Question:

I am looking for suggestions for a flowering shrub?

I need something to plant on the inside of my split rail corner fence. I want something that will be no more than 6' tall and wide, with very showy, long lasting blooms. I don't want anything "leggy" as this will be standing alone, maybe just come coneflower and black-eyed susans along the side of the fence.

Thanks for your suggestions!

  1. Weigala, they come in all different colors. They also come in  a varigated leaf that is showy even when not in bloom.

  2. I like potentilla. Mainly yellow or white flowers but if you look hard you can find other colors.

  3. How about a  Mahonia Japonica. They give all year round colour as they have beautiful glossy evergreen leaves, and fragrant yellow flowers followed by purple berries. I have one in my garden and its my favourite plant in it.

  4. These are all great answers but they may or may not work... Some need sun others only light sun or they will fry.

Is the area you want to plant full sun, part morning sun, part evening sun or shade? This info is vital to making a good decision...

  5. Gardenia plants are beautiful and smell really good.

  6. Try planting a hydrangea.  My aunt has great luck with them in zone 5. You'll have big balls of blooms with glossy green leaves by mid-summer. Also, a lilac bush is very pretty (and smells wonderful) but its blooms only last for a short while in May.
